Program Name: Nacel $10,000 Scholarship for International Travel
Due Date: December, 2005
For Who?: Students interested in international travel to France, Germany, Japan and Brazil.  Students must be 15-17 yeafrs old at departures in Aug. 2006, stron academically (they will study in a foreign language), interested in the opportunity, (they must provide their own motivation), outgoing and active (to experience life and meet people).
Amount: 9 scholarships for $10,000 to NS students to travel abroad.
Details:   These are extraordinary opportunities for students to not onlu improve their language skills and cultural understanding but to motivate themselves and the people around them to explore and set their sights on the stars, develop personal strength and skills, realize a dream, define future goals.  Such an experience compliments academic studies and inspires students.  Last year 27 students applied and 12 received scholarships so the chances of receiving one are good.

Scholarship Name:  Authors of Tomorrow Essay Contest
Due Date: Friday, Dec.1, 2006
For Who?:    This scholarship is available grade 11 and 12 students. Recipients of the scholarships will be determined based on quality of work submitted.
Amount:  Up to $10,000 available.
Details:   Students must submit an essay no longer than 500 words on ONE of the following topics to be eligible for the scholarships:   
Topic 1: If you had to choose a successor to the current Secretary Kofi Annan, who would it be and why? (Note: Ban Ki-Moon appears as if he will be the successor.)   Please choose someone that you believe would be a good candidate.
Topic 2: Which country do you feel will experience the greatest economic growth over the next 10 years and why?
Topic 3: If you could attend any university or college in the world to obtain your degree from, which institution would it be and why?

Please limit your submissions to one essay per deadline.

Scholarship Name:  Nova Scotia Recycles Contest-Grade 10/11 Video contest
Due Date: Monday, Dec.4, 2006
For Who?:   Grade 10/11 students interested in recycling and video making
Amount:  Winning students in each region will receive a gift certificate to Mountain Equipment Co-op and a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package. The schools from which the seven winners are selected will receive $500 during a regional awards celebration to be held in February 2007. Runners-up: A runner-up in each of the seven regions will be awarded a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package at a regional awards celebration in February 2007. Note: Winning regional entries in this contest may be developed into an actual advertisement that could be used by RRFB Nova Scotia for educational initiatives.
Details:   Students in grades ten and eleven are invited to submit a television commercial in the form of a sales pitch or marketing campaign directed at their peers based on the theme “Why recycle and compost?”.
Guidelines: 1) Your students have been tasked with improving waste reduction and recycling programs at school. They will design a multi-media campaign that will be implemented at your school. Their message will be directed at youth aged 15-182) Students may choose to create a minimum of one of the following for their waste reduction campaign: 3) a. TV commercial - Submissions can be on VHS tape, CD ROM, or DVD. Please note that DVD and CD footage should be saved as an “AVI” file. Maximum 1 minute. b. Radio Ad – Submissions can be on CD ROM or DVD. Maximum 30 seconds. c. Powerpoint Presentation – Maximum 20 slides. d. Website – Maximum 6 pages. e. Poster Campaign 3. Highly creative submissions are encouraged! Be sure to incorporate the themes of reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost! 4. Students can work individually or in groups of up to four people. 5. Ensure the names of participating students, as well as their grade, teacher, and name of their school are included on the submission.

Scholarship Name:  House of Commons Page Program
Due Date: Monday, Dec.4, 2006
For Who?:    To qualify you must:1) be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident and submit proof of Canadian citizenship or residency; 2)  be graduating from a secondary school or a CEGEP (with no academic interruptions) and be commencing full-time studies at one of the universities in the National Capital Region in September of the Page year; 3) have an overall academic average of at least 80% in the transcript of your final marks for Grade 11 or for your first year of CEGEP (Québec), as well as maintain this average in subsequent transcripts of your marks; 4) speak both official languages at the superior level (level C) as evaluated by the House of Commons. (A person at this level is able to handle sensitive situations where the understanding and expression of subtle, abstract, or complicated ideas is required or where unfamiliar work-related topics must be dealt with. A person at this level can support opinions or understand and express hypothetical and conditional ideas.) ; and 5) be accepted at one of the following universities in the National Capital Region: Carleton University, University of Ottawa, Saint Paul University or Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO).
Amount:  Subject to fulfilling their contracts, Pages are paid $10,800 in 26 equal payments over a 12-month period. In addition, a sum of $1,200 will be paid at the end of the employment period.
Details:  Each year, 40 students are selected from high schools and CEGEPs across Canada to come to Ottawa and work as Pages in the House of Commons. Those hired as Pages work on a part-time basis during their first year of study at one of the universities in the National Capital Region.

Scholarship Name: Nova Scotia Recycles Contest-Grade 12 Research Essay
Due Date: Monday, Dec.4, 2006
For Who?:   Grade 12 students interested in recycling.
Amount:  Winning students in each region will receive a scholarship in the amount of one thousand dollars ($1,000), payable to any registered post-secondary institution as well as a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package, to be presented at a regional awards celebration in February 2007. Winning students should be prepared to present a brief summary of their essay at the celebration. Runners-up: A runner-up in each of the seven regions will be awarded a scholarship in the amount of five hundred dollars ($500), payable to any registered post-secondary institution and a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package, to be presented at a regional awards celebration in February 2007.
Details:   Students in Grade 12 are invited to submit a research essay based on the topic “How can Nova Scotia youth be motivated to recycle and compost more?”  Contest entries will be evaluated by a committee according to the following criteria: Accuracy of information, Clarity and organization of ideas Language, grammar and spelling, Creativity and Effort
Guidelines: 1) The essay must be typed and double-spaced, and should be between 1,000 – 1,500 words. 2) All contest entries must include a written executive summary of the essay that is approximately one page in length, typed and double-spaced. 3. Research is expected and encouraged. Wherever possible, use factual information and statistics. All sources of information must be referenced. 4. Please ensure that the title of your essay, your name, grade and the name of your school are included with your contest entry. Also please include your home address and phone number so that scholarship winners may be contacted during the summer months. 5. Winning students should be prepared to present a brief summary of their essay at a regional awards celebration to be held in February 2007.

Scholarship Name:  Shad Valley
Due Date: Monday, Dec 11, 2006
For Who?:    Grade 11 and 12 students.   We're looking for people with creative and entrepreneurial minds, initiative and drive, excellent communications skills, leadership and teamwork abilities, and high academic success––especially in math and the sciences.
Amount:  Thanks to our generous supporters, they are able to maintain a program fee of $2,250 (or $5,000 CDN for international students). The fee you pay covers all Shad Valley program activities, accommodations, and a full meal plan for the four week program. The only additional costs are transportation to and from your Shad Valley campus.
There are 10 scholarships worth $3000 each.   You do not need to submit additional documentation to be considered for a scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based solely on merit and the strength of the application.

It's a program of infinite possibilities. . .a place where you can meet challenges head-on, and learn from the experience. You don't do it alone - you meet people with the same drive to excel that you have. You forge lifetime friendships, you work together with those friends, and you stretch the limits. Bottom line: you're going to be challenged, you're going to learn, and it's going to be fun. You'll be on a leading university campus for four weeks, working hands-on with 50 like-minded individuals, with access to more resources and excellent thinkers than are often found collected in one place.
There are twelve Shad Valley host campuses for 2007. They have room for up to 625 students from Grades 11 or 12 (Quebec Secondaire V, CEGEP I or II), or the international equivalent. We've had participants come from all parts of Canada, as well as the United States, Barbados, Hong Kong, and Scotland.

Scholarship Name:  Rosa Parks Essay Contest

For Who?: Any YCMHS student in grade 10/11 or 12.    
Amount:  $100 - sponsored by YCMHS Race Relations
Details:   To honor the legend of the late Rosa Parks, YCMHS is having an essay contest.   In a concise essay, reflect on how the late Rosa Parks changed our society. This is open to any YCMHS student in grade 10/11 or 12.  Winner will receive a $100 award at graduation or grade 10/11 closing ceremonies in June

Scholarship Name:  Burger King Scholars Program

For Who?: High Academics, working at least 15 hours per week-40 weeks per year, participation in community service and/or co-cirricular activities, financial need   
Amount:  $1000 each- 1500 awards given in Canada, US and Puerto Rico.

Scholarship Name:  Millennium Scholarships
Due Date: Friday, Dec.15, 2006
For Who?:    Students that have demonstrated positive and verifiable service to the community, Academic achievement, Demonstrated capacity for leadership and ability to motivate others and demonstrated interest in innovation.
Amount:  100 national awards of $5,000, renewable for up to 3 additional years, for a possible total of $20,000, 241 provincial/territorial awards of $4,000, renewable for up to 3 additional years, for a possible total of $16,000,  711 one-time local awards of $4,000.
Details:   Each year, the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation grants 1,052 entrance awards to students beginning post-secondary studies for the first time as part of its Millennium Excellence Award Program. The entrance awards seek to recognize the leaders of today and tomorrow and emphasize the importance of supporting their contributions to our country’s future.  Millennium excellence awards are not prizes for benchmarks achieved - they are investments in the development of exceptional individuals who will have long, productive careers and whose accomplishments will benefit Canada as a whole. The Foundation distributes up to five per cent of its annual allocation through its Millennium Excellence Award Program.

  Academic excellence; school and community involvement.   High school students in their graduating year who worked hard and gave back to their communities.
Amount:  10 awards of $2,000, 20 awards of $1,000, 180 awards of $500
Details:   The program will again recognize Canadian high school students in their graduating year who have not only worked hard, but have given back to their communities. Ideal candidates are well-rounded students that excel in three areas: scholastic achievement, extracurricular activity and community involvement. Recipients of scholarships will be honored as: "Wendy's Classic Achievers"
