The following Scholarships are available for the month of December: (in order by date)
Scholarship Name: Talk About Canada Scholarship Quiz
Due Date: Monday, January 15, 2007 - Monday, February 19, 2007
For Who?: All students from grades 10-12. It is designed so that every eligible student who is willing to make an effort should be able to correctly answer all the questions and be included in the draw for scholarships.
Amount: There will be one $5000 prize, twenty $1000 prizes, and forty $500 prizes. Last year 51 students from across Canada won a total of $46,000. Non-graduating students can participate but they will not be eligible for the scholarships but the names of those with perfect scores will be entered into a draw for twenty (20) $100.00 prizes.
Details: The quiz has fifty multiple-choice questions on Canadian subjects.
All answers are linked to information on the web.
Students can get help from friends, teachers and family.
The contest is on-line for four weeks.
Any student who answers all the questions correctly will be included in the draw for scholarships. Examples of Questions

Scholarship Name: The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge
Due Date: Friday, February 23, 2007
For Who?: If you're between the ages of 9 and 18, you can participate in the Challenge. You'll get to use your creative talents and discover how people from different ethnocultural backgrounds have helped make Canada what it is today. You just submit an original piece of writing or artwork celebrating the contributions made by Canadians of Aboriginal, African or other ethnocultural backgrounds to the building of Canada.
Amount: Each winner, accompanied by a parent/guardian, will receive:
a three-day, all-expenses paid trip to Nova Scotia in April 2007, including transportation, meals and hotel stay;
three days of fun-filled activities;
VIP tickets to the Mathieu Da Costa Awards Ceremony in Halifax, Nova Scotia;
a Certificate of Achievement; and
other awesome prizes.
Details: Canada is one of the world's most culturally diverse countries, comprising citizens from more than 200 ethnic backgrounds. In fact, the quality of life we enjoy today as Canadians can, in many instances, be traced to the significant contributions made by Canadians of Aboriginal, African and other ethnocultural backgrounds throughout our history. The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge is an annual writing and artwork contest launched in 1996 by the Department of Canadian Heritage. The Challenge encourages youth to discover how diversity has shaped Canada's history and the important role that multiculturalism plays in Canadian society. Mathieu Da Costa was a navigator and interpreter of African descent who likely travelled extensively throughout the Atlantic world in the late 1500s and early 1600s.

Scholarship Name: The Commonwealth Essay Competition

For Who?: Anyone grade 11 or 12 that is interested in writing (essay is 1500-2000 words).
Amount: 1st - £600

Scholarship Name: Halifax Shipping Assoc. Essay Writing Contest

For Who?: The contest is open to Junior High School and High School students in grades nine through twelve attending public, private, parochial, or home schools who are under the age of twenty and enrolled and residing anywhere within the province of Nova Scotia.
Amount: $2000
Details: The Halifax Shipping Association in an effort to promote a better community understanding of the value of the marine industry to Canada and Canadians is pleased to sponsor an essay writing contest to provide one bursary award of $ 2,000 toward the educational development of the winning entrant. "In 1,000 words or less, write an essay that is original, creative, and demonstrates an appreciation of the value of the marine business life of the Port of Halifax to the local region and to the country as a whole. Entrants so desiring are not precluded from using illustrations and/or pictures to enhance text presentations."

Program Name: Huggins High School Science Seminar: Acadia University
Due Date: April 23, 2007
For Who?: This is an opportunity for students who are interested in science careers to get together with other students who have strong science backgrounds and meet scientists from around the world.
Costs: $149.
Details: The seminar takes place May 3-4 at Acadia University. A comment that sparks curiosity, a kind remark on your project or the inspiration of a dynamic personality—any of these things can motivate a person to pursue a career in science. At this seminar, you will meet outstanding scientists and engineers from across North America who come specifically to share their enthusiasm and love of their work with you. Be inspired by the people who have taken science and technology into new areas and explore the possibilities and opportunities science opens for you. Demonstrations, lectures and discussions form the basis of learning for this unique two-and-a-half day seminar. Departmental displays and demonstrations round out the seminar’s interactive events. Scholarship Name: FAAY Scholarship for Aboriginal Youth
Due Date: Friday, October 13th, 2006
For Who?: Aboriginal students (status, non-status, Metis and Inuit) who are Canadian citizens, enrolled full time in a Canadian school located in Canada.
Amount: 50 bursaries of $750 for high school students (grades 9-12) and 85 scholarships or $2500 to $4000 for full time students enrolled in university, college or technical institute.
Details: Operated by CCAB, the Foundation for the Advancement of Aboriginal Youth is the scholarship and bursary program dedicated to developing the next generation of Aboriginal leaders. By encouraging Aboriginal youth to stay in school, FAAY bridges the gap between the reality which kids confront in their communities and the opportunities available to those with higher education.

Program Name: Nacel $10,000 Scholarship for International Travel
Due Date: December, 2005
For Who?: Students interested in international travel to France, Germany, Japan and Brazil. Students must be 15-17 yeafrs old at departures in Aug. 2006, stron academically (they will study in a foreign language), interested in the opportunity, (they must provide their own motivation), outgoing and active (to experience life and meet people).
Amount: 9 scholarships for $10,000 to NS students to travel abroad.
Details: These are extraordinary opportunities for students to not onlu improve their language skills and cultural understanding but to motivate themselves and the people around them to explore and set their sights on the stars, develop personal strength and skills, realize a dream, define future goals. Such an experience compliments academic studies and inspires students. Last year 27 students applied and 12 received scholarships so the chances of receiving one are good.

Scholarship Name: Nova Scotia Recycles Contest-Grade 10/11 Video contest
Due Date: Monday, Dec.4, 2006
For Who?: Grade 10/11 students interested in recycling and video making
Amount: Winning students in each region will receive a gift certificate to Mountain Equipment Co-op and a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package. The schools from which the seven winners are selected will receive $500 during a regional awards celebration to be held in February 2007.
Runners-up: A runner-up in each of the seven regions will be awarded a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package at a regional awards celebration in February 2007. Note: Winning regional entries in this contest may be developed into an actual advertisement that could be used by RRFB Nova Scotia for educational initiatives.
Details: Students in grades ten and eleven are invited to submit a television commercial in the form of a sales pitch or marketing campaign directed at their peers based on the theme “Why recycle and compost?”.
Guidelines: 1) Your students have been tasked with improving waste reduction and recycling programs at school. They will design a multi-media campaign that will be implemented at your school. Their message will be directed at youth aged 15-182) Students may choose to create a minimum of one of the following for their waste reduction campaign: 3) a. TV commercial - Submissions can be on VHS tape, CD ROM, or DVD. Please note that DVD and CD
footage should be saved as an “AVI” file. Maximum 1 minute.
b. Radio Ad – Submissions can be on CD ROM or DVD. Maximum 30 seconds.
c. Powerpoint Presentation – Maximum 20 slides.
d. Website – Maximum 6 pages.
e. Poster Campaign 3. Highly creative submissions are encouraged! Be sure to incorporate the themes of reduce, reuse, recycle,
and compost!
4. Students can work individually or in groups of up to four people.

Scholarship Name: Shad Valley
Due Date: Monday, Dec 11, 2006
For Who?: Grade 11 and 12 students. We're looking for people with creative and entrepreneurial minds, initiative and drive, excellent communications skills, leadership and teamwork abilities, and high academic success––especially in math and the sciences.
Amount: Thanks to our generous supporters, they are able to maintain a program fee of $2,250 (or $5,000 CDN for international students). The fee you pay covers all Shad Valley program activities, accommodations, and a full meal plan for the four week program. The only additional costs are transportation to and from your Shad Valley campus.
There are 10 scholarships worth $3000 each. You do not need to submit additional documentation to be considered for a scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based solely on merit and the strength of the application.

It's a program of infinite possibilities. . .a place where you can meet challenges head-on, and learn from the experience. Details: To honor the legend of the late Rosa Parks, YCMHS is having an essay contest. In a concise essay, reflect on how the late Rosa Parks changed our society. This is open to any YCMHS student in grade 10/11 or 12. Winner will receive a $100 award at graduation or grade 10/11 closing ceremonies in June
