The following Scholarships are local scholarships only offered in our area: (in order by date)


Scholarship Name: The Nova Scotia Freemasons Scholarship
Due Date: Wednesday, Feb.15th, 2006
For Who?:    Attending university or college.
Amount:  2 in the amount of $500 for our area.
Details: You must apply within the three days of being announced.  To apply to be considered, you must fill out an application (very short) in forms corner and submit to Bobby Lou or Mr.Lesser.  The Masonic Scholarship program has two principal objectives:  1) In keeping with the Masonic mission to practice charity, to provide financial assistance to worthy grade 12 graduating students who will pursue a post secondary education leading to a degree from an approved institution in Atlantic Canada, or a diploma, or certificate from a Community College in Nova Scotia.  2) To raise the public profile of the Masonic Fraternity in particular amoun the young adult population from whom our future membership will come. 
How to apply:  To apply, sign the sheet by Ms.Reardon's door.  Grad Info sheets may be used to make a decision on who our school nominates. 
YCMHS will submit 2 names to the Freemasons by March 9th, 2006 after a decision has been made.

Scholarship Name:  Yarmouth Volunteer Firefighters Association Bursary
Due Date: April 13, 2007
For Who?:   Open for relatives of members of the Yarmouth Volunteer Firefighters Association with preference given to children and grandchildren of members. This student must be planning on attending a post secondary institution. If no one is eligible in the given year than the bursary will not be given.
Amount:  $500
Details:   The bursary will be paid to the institution upon completion of the 1st semester. The recipient will be decided by 3 members of the Yarmouth Volunteer firefighters Association.

Scholarship Name: Municipality of the Distict of Yarmouth
Due Date:  April 20, 2007
For Who?:   Deserving students who reside in the municipality of Yarmouth and will be attending a community college or trade school or university in the fall.
Amount:  Two $500 bursaries.
Details:   To be considered, pick up application in forms corner or
download a form here and leave completed application with guidance.  The application form will ask why you feel you require financial assistance.
How to apply:  Complete a short application form, include a resume and transcipt and leave in guidance with Bobby Lou or Mr.Lesser.

Scholarship Name:  Notre Dame Student Bursary
Due Date: Monday, May 1st, 2006-No date given but the earlier you get this in, the better.
For Who?:   To a deserving Notre Dame student graduating from High School who is registered in a program of studies with a post-secondary institution.
Amount:  $500 bursary
Details: An annual bursary given to a student that attends Notre Dame Catholic Church.
How to apply:  Interested students may apply by writing a letter to the Pastoral Council explaining why they should be considered.  Letters, addressed to the chair of the Pastoral Council, may be dropped off at the offices of the Yarmouth Catholic Churches on Green Street.

Scholarship Name: Constance Killiam-Elizabeth Rogers $1000 Scholarship

Scholarship Name: PA Best Education Scholarship
Due Date: May 12th, 2006
For Who?:   Must be a student of African Descent, scholarship is based on need.
Amount:  $1000 scholarship.  If more than one applicant is eligible, two awards may be given in the amount of $500 each.
Details:  Must be graduating from YCMHS, must have a good academic standing, must be attending a college or university in the upcoming academic year, must be active in community or school.  The selection process is made by members of the Yarmouth Greenville Education Committee/Family members.  The recipent will be notified at graduation.  The payment of scholarship will be made payable to the recipient and the university/college of choice in January of their first academic year.
How to apply: Fill out application (pick up in guidance office).  You also need to include a photocopy of your acceptance letter to either college or university and 2 letters of reference (one academic source (teacher, guidance counsellor, student support worker, regional educator, Principal), One reference from someone who is not a family member (employer, friend, etc.).  Acceptance letter and letters of reference should be sent along with completed application.

Scholarship Name: Bill Covert Bursary
Due Date: Monday, May 15, 2006
For Who?:   Available to any YCMHS student who is graduating, has a parent who is member or is a retired member of the Yarmouth Local of the N.S.T.U.and intends to further their education at a post secondary institution.
Amount:  $500
Details:  This bursary is an annual bursary of $500, offered by the Yarmouth Local of the Nova Scotia Teacher's Credit Union, in memory of the late Mr.Bill Covert.  Preference will be given to those students who show that his/her parent(s) have been active union members, have shown active participation in school life and have shown academic achievement.

Scholarship Name: Michael J. Kendrick Memorial Bursary
Due Date: Monday, May 24, 2006
For Who?:   Deserving students who are planning to enter the field of social work or a helping profession (nurse, doctor, teacher, etc.) in September.
Amount:   Approx. $500 each -as many as 3 awards
Details:  Family and Children's Services of Yarmouth County offers this award and makes their decision based on applications they receive prior to graduation.
How to apply: You need:
1) A copy of first quarter grade 12 marks
2) 3 references
3) A letter indicating your future plans and your financial needs

For Who?:   Must be a member of Acadia First Nation, graduating from Grade 12 and continuing on to studies in the fall.

Scholarship Name:  Yarmouth County Fixed Gear Association Bursary
Due Date: Friday, May 27,2005 Not offered in 2006
For Who?:   Any YCMHS graduating student going to college or university.   
Amount:  $500
Details:   The Yarmouth County Fixed Gear Association, composed of hook-and-line fisherman of Yarmouth County, offers a $500 Bursary
How to apply:  To apply, submit a letter stating your qualifications:

2. Extra-Curricular activities in school and/or community

Scholarship Name: Leif Erikson Chapter IODE Bursary.
Due Date: May 30, 2007
For Who?:   The applicant and family must be in financial need.
Amount:  Unknown
Details:  You must complete all parts of the application (see below) in order to apply.
How to apply:

Scholarship Name: John J. Oliver Memorial Bursary
Due Date: Wedneday, May 31, 2006
For Who?:    A student who wishes to further his or her education in a degree program at a recognized post secondary institution in the academic year immediately following his or her graduation.  Preference will be given to any student who has a parent(s) who is(are) members of the Nova Scotia Teacher's Union and/or entering a career in education.
Amount:  $1000
Details:  This award is sponsored by the Yarmouth local of the Nova Scotia Teacher's Union.  In 1978, the Yarmouth Local of the NSTU established the John J. oliver Scholarship in memory of the late John J. Oliver who was a teacher, principal and a former president of the NSTU.  In it's selection, the committee will take into consideration the applicant'a academic record, extra curricular activities, leadership skills, financial need and career path.

Scholarship Name: Yarmouth Public Library and Museum Scholarship
Due Date: Monday, June 5, 2006
For Who?:    Any Grade 12 student at YCMHS.
Amount:  $3000 that will be split into "chunks".
Details:  You must complete an application form and enclose a sample of your creative prose writing with the application.  This may be a piece of your own choosing, but not a research paper (should be typed).  It will be used by the selection committee in reaching their final decision.  Marks must be handwritten on application form and a transcript included.

Scholarship Name:    Coastal Financial Credit Union
Due Date: Friday, June 9, 2006
For Who?: Student or parent must be a member of coastal Financial Credit Union for at least 1 year
Amount:  4 individual $1000 bursaries
Details:  Open to graduates from local high schools continuing their education at either a University of Community College.  Eligible candidates will be selected from either Yarmouth, Barrington, Ecole secondaire de Par-en-Bas or Drumlin Heights High Schools.  The graduate must have a co-operate spirit at school and in his/her community, as well as demonstrating leadership and motivation.  Scholastic achievement will be taken into consideration; please submit the transcript of your marks.

Scholarship Name: Royal Canadian Legion Branch 143 Bursary
Due Date: June 10, 2006
For Who?:  A graduate that is a child or grandchild of an ex-service person, living in the Branch's district (Brooklyn, Hebron, Cape Forchu, Overton, Pembroke, Sandford, Chegoggin, Wellington, Short Beach, Darlings Lake, Port Maitland, Cedar Lake and Beaver River. 
Amount:  $500 bursary
Details:  The bursary will be applied to the recipient's university account for the final semester in the first year of study.  There is no application form for these bursaries.  You must complete a letter, see below:
How to apply: Write a letter to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 143 and include the following:
1) your name, address and telephone number.
2) your relationship to a named ex-service person.
3) the name of the university you will attend and the course of study for which you have been accepted.
4) your reasons for applying for the bursary.

Scholarship Name:   Yarmouth County Federation of Agriculture

For Who?: An high school student from Yarmouth County who plans to further his or her education in the field of Agriculture.   
Amount:  $1000
Details:   Offered by the Yarmouth County Federation of Agriculture in the amount of $500.
How to apply:  To be considered, a student will have to do two things:
1) Supply proof of his or her acceptance at a post secondary institution in a course of study leading to a career in Agriculture.
2) Write a short essay about themselves with special emphasis on their reasons for choosing agriculture as a career.  This essay should be no longer than 500 words.

Scholarship Name: Dr. Charles Webster Bursary

For Who?:   Students entering full time study in the "arts" with a good average (75% or higher)
Amount:  $800
Details:  Award is based on a combination of good average marks (75% or higher), involvement in school or community activities including part time jobs.  Award is also based on financial need.

Scholarship Name:   Saulnier's Home Hardware Construction Trades Scholarship

For Who?: Student must be entering one of the following trades:  Carpentry, Electrical or Plumbing. This scholarship is available to graduating students who are highly motivated, community minded and have demonstrated strong leadership skills in school and/or the community.

Scholarship Name:   Tyler Fitzgerald Memorial Bursary

For Who?: For a student involved in Hockey.   This student must be involved in Minor hockey or have been in the past.  This is for a graduating student going to further their education (preference given to students going to community college)
Amount:  $500 award
Details:   Offered by the Yarmouth Minor Hockey
How to apply:  Students need to write a letter to Yarmouth Co. Minor Hockey Association including:

-Why you feel you are deserving  
-Your involvement in Hockey.

Scholarship Name:  Shaun Saunders Scholarship
Due Date: Wednesday, June 14th, 2006
For Who?:    A student accepted and enrols in a recognized university or college, has shown academic achievement during high school years and has
shown as contributing to the school atmosphere through friendly interaction with other students and staff.
Amount:  $500
Details:   A scholarship in the amount of $500 will be awarded in memory of Shaun Patrick SAUNDERS by his family.  The scholarship is non-renewable and is awarded to a student of YCMHS annually.
How to apply:  Application may be made by letter and include:
-Name, Address, University/College where accepted and to be enroled, future academic plans (degree program?), brief description of why you feel that you qualify for this scholarship.
-Letters of reference from two sources in any of the following categories are requested:  Teacher, Employer, Coach or community group leader.
-A transcript of marks is also requested.

Scholarship Name:  Nova Scotia Recycles Contest-Grade 10/11 Video contest
Due Date: Monday, Dec.4, 2006
For Who?:   Grade 10/11 students interested in recycling and video making
Amount:  Winning students in each region will receive a gift certificate to Mountain Equipment Co-op and a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package. The schools from which the seven winners are selected will receive $500 during a regional awards celebration to be held in February 2007. Runners-up: A runner-up in each of the seven regions will be awarded a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package at a regional awards celebration in February 2007. Note: Winning regional entries in this contest may be developed into an actual advertisement that could be used by RRFB Nova Scotia for educational initiatives.
Details:   Students in grades ten and eleven are invited to submit a television commercial in the form of a sales pitch or marketing campaign directed at their peers based on the theme “Why recycle and compost?”.
Guidelines: 1) Your students have been tasked with improving waste reduction and recycling programs at school. They will design a multi-media campaign that will be implemented at your school. Their message will be directed at youth aged 15-182) Students may choose to create a minimum of one of the following for their waste reduction campaign: 3) a. TV commercial - Submissions can be on VHS tape, CD ROM, or DVD. Please note that DVD and CD footage should be saved as an “AVI” file. Maximum 1 minute. b. Radio Ad – Submissions can be on CD ROM or DVD. Maximum 30 seconds. c. Powerpoint Presentation – Maximum 20 slides. d. Website – Maximum 6 pages. e. Poster Campaign 3. Highly creative submissions are encouraged! Be sure to incorporate the themes of reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost! 4. Students can work individually or in groups of up to four people. 5. Ensure the names of participating students, as well as their grade, teacher, and name of their school are included on the submission.

Scholarship Name: Nova Scotia Recycles Contest-Grade 12 Research Essay
Due Date: Monday, Dec.4, 2006
For Who?:   Grade 12 students interested in recycling.
Amount:  Winning students in each region will receive a scholarship in the amount of one thousand dollars ($1,000), payable to any registered post-secondary institution as well as a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package, to be presented at a regional awards celebration in February 2007. Winning students should be prepared to present a brief summary of their essay at the celebration. Runners-up: A runner-up in each of the seven regions will be awarded a scholarship in the amount of five hundred dollars ($500), payable to any registered post-secondary institution and a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package, to be presented at a regional awards celebration in February 2007.
Details:   Students in Grade 12 are invited to submit a research essay based on the topic “How can Nova Scotia youth be motivated to recycle and compost more?”  Contest entries will be evaluated by a committee according to the following criteria: Accuracy of information, Clarity and organization of ideas Language, grammar and spelling, Creativity and Effort
Guidelines: 1) The essay must be typed and double-spaced, and should be between 1,000 – 1,500 words. 2) All contest entries must include a written executive summary of the essay that is approximately one page in length, typed and double-spaced. 3. Research is expected and encouraged. Wherever possible, use factual information and statistics. All sources of information must be referenced. 4. Please ensure that the title of your essay, your name, grade and the name of your school are included with your contest entry. Also please include your home address and phone number so that scholarship winners may be contacted during the summer months. 5. Winning students should be prepared to present a brief summary of their essay at a regional awards celebration to be held in February 2007.

Scholarship Name:  Rosa Parks Essay Contest
Due Date: Thursday, Dec 15, 2005.  Pass into guidance
For Who?: Any YCMHS student in grade 10/11 or 12.    
Amount:  $100 - sponsored by YCMHS Race Relations
Details:   To honor the legend of the late Rosa Parks, YCMHS is having an essay contest.   In a concise essay, reflect on how the late Rosa Parks changed our society. This is open to any YCMHS student in grade 10/11 or 12.  Winner will receive a $100 award at graduation or grade 10/11 closing ceremonies in June
