Scholarship Name: RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program
Due Date: Thursday, January 31, 2007.  
For Who?:     Status Indians, non-status Indians, Inuit or Metis are eligible to apply.  Financial need is a consideration
Amount:  $4000 annually for five aboriginal students.
Details:  RBC Financial Group's Aboriginal Student Awards Program was launched in 1992 to assist Aboriginal students to complete post secondary education, and provide an opportunity for RBC to strengthen it's relationship with the Aboriginal community.  In addition, recipients who indicate an interest in pursuing a banking career are considered for summer and postgraduate employment at RBC.
Each year, five Aboriginal students will receive $4000 annually for their education expenses, to a maximum of four years at a University, or two years at a college, in disciplines related (but not restricted) to financial services industry.  To be eligible, applications must be received at RBC Financial Group by January 31st of each year.  Successful applications will be notified by March 31st.

Scholarship Name: The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge
Due Date: Friday, February 23, 2007
For Who?:    If you're between the ages of 9 and 18, you can participate in the Challenge. You'll get to use your creative talents and discover how people from different ethnocultural backgrounds have helped make Canada what it is today.  You just submit an original piece of writing or artwork celebrating the contributions made by Canadians of Aboriginal, African or other ethnocultural backgrounds to the building of Canada.
Amount:  Each winner, accompanied by a parent/guardian, will receive: a three-day, all-expenses paid trip to Nova Scotia in April 2007, including transportation, meals and hotel stay; three days of fun-filled activities; VIP tickets to the Mathieu Da Costa Awards Ceremony in Halifax, Nova Scotia; a Certificate of Achievement; and other awesome prizes.
Details:  Canada is one of the world's most culturally diverse countries, comprising citizens from more than 200 ethnic backgrounds. In fact, the quality of life we enjoy today as Canadians can, in many instances, be traced to the significant contributions made by Canadians of Aboriginal, African and other ethnocultural backgrounds throughout our history. The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge is an annual writing and artwork contest launched in 1996 by the Department of Canadian Heritage. The Challenge encourages youth to discover how diversity has shaped Canada's history and the important role that multiculturalism plays in Canadian society.  Mathieu Da Costa was a navigator and interpreter of African descent who likely travelled extensively throughout the Atlantic world in the late 1500s and early 1600s.

Scholarship Name: First Nations and Indigenous Black Students Scholarship- Dalhousie
Due Date: Wednesday, March 15, 2006
For Who?:   Available to First Nations and Indigenous Black students, who are residents of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island, and are entering Dalhousie for the first time.    Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of a student's financial need and academic standing.
Amount:  Ten renewable entrance scholarships valued at $3,000 each are available.   Valued at $12,000 over four years.
Details: Scholarships are available to students who are applying directly from high school as well as those who have attended another post-secondary institution.   Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of a student's financial need and academic standing. Please submit a completed application to the Assistant Registrar, Awards by March 15.

Scholarship Name:  Nova Scotia Power Inc. Employment Equity Scholarship
Due Date: March 31st, 2007
For Who?:    For visible minorities, persons with disabilities or aboriginal persons. Academic achievement, community involvement, involvement in extra-curricular activities, and personal attributes
Amount:  Four (4) $1,500 entrance scholarships.  Three or four years, dependent on the duration of the undergraduate program  
Details:   Applicants must be graduating from a Nova Scotia high school and entering their first year at a post-secondary institution in the fall of the same year as graduation from high school.   Scholarships will not be awarded for pursuit of Graduate Studies or made in combination with any other Nova Scotia Power scholarships. Recipients must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and permanent resident of Nova Scotia for at least three years, two of which are immediately prior to high school graduation. Scholarships and bursaries are non-transferable.     (*) Visible Minorities in Canada are defined under the Employment Equity Act as: "persons other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour. This consists of Chinese, Asians (South, West and Southeast), Blacks, Arabs, Filipinos, Latin Americans, Japanese, Koreans, and Pacific Islanders."

Scholarship Name: Pengrowth-Nova Scotia Energy Scholarship
Due Date: April 27, 2007
For Who?: A Nova Scotia Student entering undergraduate studies in business, sciences or engineering at a provincial university designated for a Nova Scotia student claiming First Nation or visible minority status.
Amount:  1 scholarship of $2,500 (renewable for up to four years). 
Details:   The Scholarship represents an important partnerships between the Province of Nova Scotia and Pengrowth Corporation.  The candidate should show leadership potential and have a record of community involvement in additional to strong but not necessarily top academic standing.

Scholarship Name: PA Best Education Scholarship
Due Date: May 12th, 2006
For Who?:   Must be a student of African Descent, scholarship is based on need.
Amount:  $1000 scholarship.  If more than one applicant is eligible, two awards may be given in the amount of $500 each.
Details:  Must be graduating from YCMHS, must have a good academic standing, must be attending a college or university in the upcoming academic year, must be active in community or school.  The selection process is made by members of the Yarmouth Greenville Education Committee/Family members.  The recipent will be notified at graduation.  The payment of scholarship will be made payable to the recipient and the university/college of choice in January of their first academic year.
How to apply: Fill out application (pick up in guidance office).  You also need to include a photocopy of your acceptance letter to either college or university and 2 letters of reference (one academic source (teacher, guidance counsellor, student support worker, regional educator, Principal), One reference from someone who is not a family member (employer, friend, etc.).  Acceptance letter and letters of reference should be sent along with completed application.

Scholarship Name:  Harry Jerome Scholarships
Due Date: Tuesday, May 30, 2006
For Who?:  The Harry Jerome Scholarships are given to Black students attending a college or university in Canada in order to nurture the academic excellence of Black youth. A Black African or Black Caribbean student who is:
1. A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
2. Between 1 7 to 30 years of age as of the end of September of the year in which the scholarship is granted.
3. Enrolled in a full time degree (graduate or undergraduate), diploma or certificate program at a Canadian college or university for the academic year commencing in the year in which the scholarship is granted. Students commencing their studies in the Fall are eligible.
Selection will be based on: 1. High academic achievement. 2. Financial need. 3. Recognized contribution to the Black community.

Details:   Harry Jerome held six world track records during the 1960s and represented Canada in three Olympic Games. He earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in science at the University of Oregon and later become a leader in sports administration in British Columbia. Mr. Jerome was admitted to the Order of Canada in 1971 and inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2001. The Harry Jerome Scholarship Fund was first established by the Black Business and Professional Association in 1988 to honour the memory of Mr. Jerome.

Include your contribution to the Black community, other volunteer activities, your academic achievements, your most important accomplishments and your future goals. 3. A brief outline of your budget for the coming year including information on your expected sources of funding (e.g. Student Loan, parents, etc.) 4. Two letters of reference from the two individuals named in your application. One must be a teacher from your school, college or university. The other must be from an individual, other than your teacher, who is familiar with your community service. 5. An up to date official transcript. 6. Scholarship Name: African Nova Scotian University Scholarship-75% or higher average
Due Date: , May 31st, 2007
For Who?:   Available to African Nova Scotian (Black) students who have successfully completed Grade 12 in the public school system of Nova Scotia within the current year who have been accepted and will attend university in the academic year immediately following Grade 12 have obtained an average of 75% or higher in five Grade 12 academic courses including the compulsory course of English 12 and any four others from the Public School Program (PSP), please note that approved local courses (ALC) will not be used in this calculation, must  have demonstrated leadership qualities through participation in community affairs, student activities or athletics and  be recommended by the high school principal or guidance counsellor.
Amount:  $4500
Details:   The Education Incentive Program for African Nova Scotian Students was established in 1965 by the Government of Nova Scotia to assist and encourage African Nova Scotian students to continue their education in high schools, community college, technical institutes, universities and other approved post-secondary institutions.  This program has evolved into the Scholarship and Awards Program for African Nova Scotian Students.

Scholarship Name:  Visible Minority Scholarship -NUPEG
Due Date: Friday, June 30, 2007
For Who?: All visible minority children (including foster children) of National Union of Public and General Employees (Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU)) members who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time next year are eligible to apply. Amount:  $1500
Details:   Winner will be determined on the basis of a 750-1000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of visible minorities.  An application form must be completed and accompany the essay.

For Who?:   Available to African Nova Scotian (Black) students who have successfully completed Grade 12 in the public school system of Nova Scotia.   applicants must be enrolled full-time in an approved Community College, Private Career College, or Trade School.  this award is available for one year only, unless the course of study is a two year program if you are enrolling in a two year program, please note that applicants must apply for funding the following year by submitting an application second year funding of awards is based on satisfactory academic standing.
Amount:  $1800

Scholarship Name: Performing Arts Award for African NS Students
Due Date: Saturday, July 31, 2007
For Who?:   Available to African Nova Scotian (Black) students who have successfully completed Grade 12 in the public school system of Nova Scotia within the current year.   applicant must be enrolled on a full-time basis in the first or second year of a recognized university degree program (i.e. Bachelor of Music) have a concentration in one of the performing arts genre, i.e. music, voice, dance, theatrical performances; have demonstrated qualities of performing arts through participation in student activities and community affairs.
Amount:  $1000

For Who?:   Available to Mi'kmaw with a Band Number living on a reserve in Nova Scotia.  Must be graduating from Grade 12 and continuing on to further studies in September.  Must be a positive role model.

Scholarship Name:  FAAY Scholarship for Aboriginal Youth
Due Date: Friday, October 13th, 2006
For Who?:   Aboriginal students (status, non-status, Metis and Inuit) who are Canadian citizens, enrolled full time in a Canadian school located in Canada.  
Amount:  50 bursaries of $750 for high school students (grades 9-12) and 85 scholarships or $2500 to $4000 for full time students enrolled in university, college or technical institute.
Details:  Operated by CCAB, the Foundation for the Advancement of Aboriginal Youth is the scholarship and bursary program dedicated to developing the next generation of Aboriginal leaders. By encouraging Aboriginal youth to stay in school, FAAY bridges the gap between the reality which kids confront in their communities and the opportunities available to those with higher education.

Scholarship Name:  Rosa Parks Essay Contest

For Who?: Any YCMHS student in grade 10/11 or 12.    
Amount:  $100 - sponsored by YCMHS Race Relations
Details:   To honor the legend of the late Rosa Parks, YCMHS is having an essay contest.   In a concise essay, reflect on how the late Rosa Parks changed our society. This is open to any YCMHS student in grade 10/11 or 12.  Winner will receive a $100 award at graduation or grade 10/11 closing ceremonies in June
