Multiculural Awareness
The following Scholarships are available for students that are involved with Multiculturism and Human Rights issues: (in order by date)
Scholarship Name: The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge
Due Date: Friday, February 23, 2007
For Who?: If you're between the ages of 9 and 18, you can participate in the Challenge. You'll get to use your creative talents and discover how people from different ethnocultural backgrounds have helped make Canada what it is today. You just submit an original piece of writing or artwork celebrating the contributions made by Canadians of Aboriginal, African or other ethnocultural backgrounds to the building of Canada.
Amount: Each winner, accompanied by a parent/guardian, will receive:
a three-day, all-expenses paid trip to Nova Scotia in April 2007, including transportation, meals and hotel stay;
three days of fun-filled activities;
VIP tickets to the Mathieu Da Costa Awards Ceremony in Halifax, Nova Scotia;
a Certificate of Achievement; and
other awesome prizes.
Details: Canada is one of the world's most culturally diverse countries, comprising citizens from more than 200 ethnic backgrounds. In fact, the quality of life we enjoy today as Canadians can, in many instances, be traced to the significant contributions made by Canadians of Aboriginal, African and other ethnocultural backgrounds throughout our history. The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge is an annual writing and artwork contest launched in 1996 by the Department of Canadian Heritage. The Challenge encourages youth to discover how diversity has shaped Canada's history and the important role that multiculturalism plays in Canadian society. Mathieu Da Costa was a navigator and interpreter of African descent who likely travelled extensively throughout the Atlantic world in the late 1500s and early 1600s.
How to apply: Simply fill out the participant’s entry form (download here) and send it, along with your piece of writing (e.g. short story, poem, play, illustrated story, essay, etc.) or artwork, to the following address:

Scholarship Name: Dr. P. Anthony Johnstone $6000 Entrance Scholarship
Due Date: March 31, 2007
For Who?: A graduate of a Nova Scotia high school in this academic year (not as a result of upgrading),
A resident of Nova Scotia,
A student who is entering the first year of an undergraduate Bachelor's degree program this fall, and who has demonstrated interest in multiculturalism and human rights and
A student who will study for this degree at a university in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, or Prince Edward Island
Amount: $6000 (non-renewable)
Details: This entrance scholarship was established by the Province of Nova Scotia in August 1991 to encourage young people to educate themselves on human rights issues in Canada. It honours the life and work of the late Dr. P. Anthony Johnstone, a former Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.

Scholarship Name: Jeremy Dias Scholarship
Due Date: Monday, May 15, 2006
For Who?: The ideal winner(s) of this scholarship will be student(s) who have worked to eliminate discrimination within their community, as demonstrated by their application essay and references. Those who work within their secondary school or community to address homophobia/heterosexism will be given special consideration.
Applicants must also be Canadian citizens; and must be a high school or Cegep students entering accredited post-secondary institutions, or students currently enrolled in undergraduate programs at accredited post-secondary institutions.
Amount:
Details: The Jeremy Dias Scholarship is Canada’s First Diversity Scholarship for youth. The scholarship seeks to reward a youth that has taken initiative in addressing discrimination in their school or community.
How to apply: To Apply, applicants must submit the following to Jer’s Vision:
1) One copy of the application form (download here) (PDF);
or pick one up in guidance.
2) Two reference letters;
3) Their current scholastic transcript;
4) Their current resume;
5) one copy of an essay of up to 500 words describing their efforts to eliminate discrimination in their community (one printed copy, and one electronic copy on disk/CD); and
6)
A recent photo of themselves (for the website, should they win).
**Note:
Reference letters should not be from relatives.
It is recommended that one reference be from a high school/Cegep teacher or administrator.
Applications and support material will be accepted in both French and English.

Scholarship Name: Rosa Parks Essay Contest
Due Date: Thursday, Dec 15, 2005. Pass into guidance
For Who?: Any YCMHS student in grade 10/11 or 12.
Amount: $100 - sponsored by YCMHS Race Relations
Details: To honor the legend of the late Rosa Parks, YCMHS is having an essay contest. In a concise essay, reflect on how the late Rosa Parks changed our society. This is open to any YCMHS student in grade 10/11 or 12. Winner will receive a $100 award at graduation or grade 10/11 closing ceremonies in June
