The following Scholarships are available for students with disabilities: (in order by date)


Scholarship Name: The Canadian Hard of Hearing Scholarship
Due Date: Weduesday January 31, 2007
For Who?:    The purpose of the Scholarship Program is to offer financial assistance and recognition to hard of hearing and deafened students registered in a full time program at a recognized Canadian college or university, in any area of study, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a diploma or degree. Applicants to this Scholarship Program must be either hard of hearing, deafened or oral deaf. Support documentation is required.  Applications will be judged by a number of criteria including academic achievement, determination to cope with hearing loss, and community involvement.
Amount:   two awards of $1,000 each will be granted..
Details:   The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association Scholarship Program was established in 2002. This Program is supported by donations of the members of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA) and by the generous contribution from the Algar family. The mandate of CHHA is to encourage awareness of hearing loss and to advocate self-help for hard of hearing or deafened people. Its aim is to achieve full hearing accessibility in Canadian society. The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association Foundation (CHHAF) was established to create a perpetual financial legacy to support the activities of CHHA, and create specific initiatives for hard of hearing or deafened persons in Canada. The Algar family wishes to continue to support the work of their parents, particularly their father, who was a strong advocate of the rights of hard of hearing people and his great faith in young people.

Scholarship Name:  Partnership for Access Awareness Scholarship
Due Date:  April 30, 2007
For Who?:   Nova Scotians with a disability in their pursuit of post-secondary studies.
Amount:  Nine $1000 bursaries.
Details:   To be considered, scholarship candidates must:
1) be a person with a permanent disability (what is a permanent disability? See
website )
2) be a permanent resident of Nova Scotia
3) be entering or continuing studies in a Canadian post-secondary institution that is recognized by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.
4) not to be involved in the selection process or related to any scholarship selection committee member
Criteria: community involvement, extra-curricular activities, reaction to obstacles, academic preformance, eduacational goals and direction, pursuit of studies in a business field

download here.  In addition to the application, you need:
1) two letters of reference. Ideally, the reference letters will touch on the obstacles the applicant has overcome:  one from a past or current teacher, guidance counsellor or professor and one from an individual other than a family member who has known you for more than one year.
2) official transcripts for the last two years.

Scholarship Name: The Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia-James Rusself Kline Memorial Bursary.
Due Date: May 15, 2007
For Who?:   Persons who are a under doctor's care for treatment of Epilepsy.  • you must be at least 18yrs of age by August 1st in the year of application
Amount: $500
Details:  Must be 18 years of age by August 1st in the year of application.  Must be accepted for study at a recognized post secondary school.  Must be a resident of Nova Scotia for at least twelve months.  Must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant.
How to apply:  Fill out application (guidance office).  Fill out a referee form (guidance office) or
download complete application here.  You also need:
1) resume outlining your education, volunteer and work experience
2) submit in writing no more than three pages your education and career goals, how this bursary money will help you achieve this goal, your goals, how epilepsy has affected your goals, how this course of study will make a difference in your life, identify your need for financial support and whether you have dependents.
3) official transcript of your marks
4) doctor's signature on application form

Scholarship Name: Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship -NUPEG
Due Date: Friday, June 30, 2007
For Who?: All children (including foster children) with disabilities of National Union of Public and General Employees (Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU)) members who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time next year are eligible to apply.
Amount: 
 $1500
Details:   Winner will be determined on the basis of a 750-1000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities.   An application form must be completed and accompany the essay.

Scholarship Name:    Wales Scholarship-Royal Canadian Legion
Due Date: Saturday, July 15, 2007
For Who?: Students that are considered to be a disabled Nova Scotian, starting or continuing post-secondary education in Nova Scotia (University, college or NSCC) and ineligible to receive tuition assistance under the Labour Market Agreement for Person with Disabilities Program.
Amount:  $6000 (may be divided up for multiple recipients)
Details:  An annual scholarship fund provided by the province of Nova Scotia to commemorate the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales.  The annual fund is administered by Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of the Royal Canadian Legion.
