The Museum also recognizes the need to assist students who plan to continue their studies in the field of history. The Colonel Douglas H. Gunter History Awards have been instituted to support and encourage these students.
About this year's theme:  On the morning of September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States killed over 3000 people, including 25 Canadians. Canada responded in October 2001 by joining an American-led invasion of Afghanistan, which had sheltered and supported many of those responsible. Your original work should explore how Canada's presence in Afghanistan has changed in the past five years. Some questions you might wish to consider in your work: Are Canadian interests served by the ongoing military mission? How has it affected Canadians at home and internationally? How have the Afghan people responded?
