The following Scholarships are available for students that like to write essays: (in order by date)
Scholarship Name: The Mensa Canada Scholarship Programe
Due Date: Thursday, January 31, 2007. The competition results will be announced after June 15, 2007.
For Who?: Applicants must be at least 18 years old on January 31, 2007. Awards are based on applicant's essay.
Amount: $750 or $1000
Details: By writing your career plan and describing the means you undertake to achieve your goals, you may earn a scholarship of $750 or $1000.
The Mensa Canada Scholarship Programme wishes to reward students who follow through with their career strategy. To apply, all you need to do is to submit a 250 word essay.
Please read the following instructions carefully. Every year, students are disqualified for failing to meet one of the criteria, such as the deadline, the maximum length, or the subject matter of the essay.
Last year approximately 25% of the essays we received were disqualified! The reasons: students wrote more than 250 words, or they identified themselves in the essay. Don't let this happen to you!
How to apply: Write an essay describing your career goals in 250 words or less.
Your essay should describe specific goals (academic, vocational or career). It should contain explicit ideas and information.
Indicate the course of study and the post secondary institution which you are attending in the 2005 - 2006 academic year.
Describe any steps you have taken, relevant experience gained (e.g., paid or volunteer jobs, classes, honours, offices, organizations) and any difficulties you have overcome in pursuit of your goal. State the steps by which you intend to achieve your goal.
The essay text must not contain any form of the author's identity.
Your e-mail must contain only your personal information and the attached file must contain only your essay. The e-mails and the attached files will be numbered and separated. The essays will be judged anonymously.
Applications must be sent by e-mail as indicated in the instructions. Those received by any other means (e. g. links to web pages, by post or by fax) will be disqualified.
To Submit Essay: 1) Read the contest rules carefully.
2) Create an e-mail and enter the following information in the body of your email:
Your last name, first name(s)
Current address
Permanent address (if different)
Your e-mail address (if different from the one on your email)
Your field and level of studies in 2005 - 2006
Name and address of institution you will attend during the 2005 - 2006 academic year
3) Save your essay in TXT or RTF format under the title "Essay".
4) Send your essay as an attached file.
5) Send the e-mail to the MCSP judges ( essay@mensacanada.ca ) with "2006 Essay Competition" as the subject.

Scholarship Name: The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge
Due Date: Friday, February 23, 2007
For Who?: If you're between the ages of 9 and 18, you can participate in the Challenge. You'll get to use your creative talents and discover how people from different ethnocultural backgrounds have helped make Canada what it is today. You just submit an original piece of writing or artwork celebrating the contributions made by Canadians of Aboriginal, African or other ethnocultural backgrounds to the building of Canada.
Amount: Each winner, accompanied by a parent/guardian, will receive:
a three-day, all-expenses paid trip to Nova Scotia in April 2007, including transportation, meals and hotel stay;
three days of fun-filled activities;
VIP tickets to the Mathieu Da Costa Awards Ceremony in Halifax, Nova Scotia;
a Certificate of Achievement; and
other awesome prizes.
Details: Canada is one of the world's most culturally diverse countries, comprising citizens from more than 200 ethnic backgrounds. In fact, the quality of life we enjoy today as Canadians can, in many instances, be traced to the significant contributions made by Canadians of Aboriginal, African and other ethnocultural backgrounds throughout our history. The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge is an annual writing and artwork contest launched in 1996 by the Department of Canadian Heritage. The Challenge encourages youth to discover how diversity has shaped Canada's history and the important role that multiculturalism plays in Canadian society. Mathieu Da Costa was a navigator and interpreter of African descent who likely travelled extensively throughout the Atlantic world in the late 1500s and early 1600s.

Scholarship Name: The Commonwealth Essay Competition
Due Date: Thursday, March 1, 2007
For Who?: Anyone grade 11 or 12 that is interested in writing (essay is 1500-2000 words).
Amount: 1st - £600
2nd - £300 (Stephen Kemp Memorial)
3rd - £100 (British Council Association Prize)
4th - £100 (Maragaret Best Endowment)
Details: Write your essay of 1500-2000 words
All questions can be answered by writing an essay or a story which explores the topic in an interesting and relevant way.
Topic choices: 1) Welcome to my family.
2) EITHER What does slavery mean to you? OR The Trans-Atlantic Slave - history or unfinished business? OR The link between freedom and slavery is complicated. What insights into human society and/or human nature can we gain from an honest appraisal of this relationship?
3) A world without aeroplanes.
4) What if...EITHER Rewrite history as if a well-known event or development did not take place OR Change one thing in your life or the life of your community and follow through the consequences.
5) Migration.

Details: Students must submit an essay no longer than 500 words on ONE of the following topics to be eligible for the scholarships:
Topic 1: In your opinion, what course in high school that is not currently mandatory for a student to take should become mandatory?.
Topic 2: If you could make one scientific discovery in your lifetime, what would it be, and why?
Topic 3: If you had the power to change an event in history (outcome of an election, who won a war, etc.), which would you choose to change, and why?

Scholarship Name: Caregivers Nova Scotia Essay Competition
Due Date: Friday, March 9, 2007
For Who?: Grades 10, 11 and 12 throughout the province who are willing to write a 500-700 word essay.
Prize: Download Prizes here.. 1) Win a trip for four to Orlando, Florida or Daytona Beach, Florida.*Travel arrangements will be made by Caregivers Nova Scotia.. 2).The top six entries will be published, with photos of the author and caregivers, in the Caregivers Nova Scotia newsletter Connections.
3). The caregivers profiled in the top six entries will also be honoured at our annual caregiver luncheons either in Halifax in May 2007 or Cape Breton in September 2007 depending on the most convenient location for the family.
Details: Profile a caregiver in your family or community whom you respect and admire.
(Mention hobbies or a job they may have had to give up to become a caregiver. If they are caring for a parent are they also raising a family? Does anyone help them? How? How long have they been a caregiver? Who are they caregiving to? Why have you chosen to profile them? Why do you respect and admire them)
. Examples of caregivers are :
* Parents caring for a son or daughter with mental or physical challenges who may or may not be able to live on their own.
* A mother, or father, caring for their parent(s) at home or in a long term care facility. They could also be raising their own family at the same time. These are known as the Sandwich Generation.
* A husband caring for a wife or a wife caring for a husband.
* A friend or neighbour caring for someone not related to them.
* A teen caring for a brother or sister with mental or physical challenges, a parent or grandparent, friend or neighbour.
* Any of these people could be giving care to someone in a long term care facility (nursing home) or to someone who lives alone or a distance away from them

For Who?: This scholarship is available grade 11 and 12 students. Recipients of the scholarships will be determined based on quality of work submitted.
Amount: Up to $10,000 available.
Details: Students must submit an essay no longer than 500 words on ONE of the following topics to be eligible for the scholarships:
Topic 1: Many experts belief that an academically competitive atmosphere is helpful to you as a student. Either agree or disagree with this statement and explain your rationale.
Topic 2: Many experts believe that the world will continue to get more riddled with war and violence over the course of the next ten years. Either agree or disagree with this statement and explain your rationale.
Topic 3: Many experts believe an influx of foreign-born workers will be an effective solution to a future labor shortage, when "baby boomers" reach the age of retirement. Either agree or disagree with this statement and explain your rationale.

Scholarship Name: Authors of Tomorrow Essay Contest

For Who?: This scholarship is available grade 11 and 12 students. Recipients of the scholarships will be determined based on quality of work submitted.
Amount: Up to $10,000 available.
Details: Students must submit an essay no longer than 500 words on ONE of the following topics to be eligible for the scholarships:
Topic 1: If you had to choose a successor to the current Secretary Kofi Annan, who would it be and why? (Note: Ban Ki-Moon appears as if he will be the successor.) Please choose someone that you believe would be a good candidate.
Topic 2: Which country do you feel will experience the greatest economic growth over the next 10 years and why?
Topic 3: If you could attend any university or college in the world to obtain your degree from, which institution would it be and why?

Scholarship Name: Nova Scotia Recycles Contest-Grade 12 Research Essay
Due Date: Monday, Dec.4, 2006
For Who?: Grade 12 students interested in recycling.
Amount: Winning students in each region will receive a scholarship in the amount of one thousand dollars ($1,000), payable to any registered post-secondary institution as well as a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package, to be presented at a regional awards celebration in February 2007. Winning students should be prepared to present a brief summary of their essay at the celebration.
Runners-up: A runner-up in each of the seven regions will be awarded a scholarship in the amount of five hundred dollars ($500), payable to any registered post-secondary institution and a Nova Scotia Recycles prize package, to be presented at a regional awards celebration in February 2007.
Details: Students in Grade 12 are invited to submit a research essay based on the topic “How can Nova Scotia youth be motivated to recycle and compost more?” Contest entries will be evaluated by a committee according to the following criteria:
Accuracy of information,
Clarity and organization of ideas
Language, grammar and spelling,
Creativity
and Effort
Guidelines: 1) The essay must be typed and double-spaced, and should be between 1,000 – 1,500 words.
2) All contest entries must include a written executive summary of the essay that is approximately one page in
length, typed and double-spaced.
3. Research is expected and encouraged. Wherever possible, use factual information and statistics. All sources
of information must be referenced.
4. Please ensure that the title of your essay, your name, grade and the name of your school are included with
your contest entry. Also please include your home address and phone number so that scholarship winners
may be contacted during the summer months.
5. Winning students should be prepared to present a brief summary of their essay at a regional awards
celebration to be held in February 2007.

Scholarship Name: Rosa Parks Essay Contest

Amount: $100 - sponsored by YCMHS Race Relations
Details: To honor the legend of the late Rosa Parks, YCMHS is having an essay contest. In a concise essay, reflect on how the late Rosa Parks changed our society. This is open to any YCMHS student in grade 10/11 or 12. Winner will receive a $100 award at graduation or grade 10/11 closing ceremonies in June
